Felt Like An Earthquake Or A Bomb Blast
June 14, 2025: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale struck the Kuril Islands in the early hours of June 14, 2025, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were recorded at 12:05 AM IST at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the NCS posted:
“EQ of M: 6.1, On: 14/06/2025 00:05:11 IST, Lat: 46.01 N, Long: 153.38 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Kuril Islands.”
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) later reported a slightly stronger quake of 6.5 magnitude at a depth of 12 km (7.46 miles).
The Kuril-Kamchatka Arc, part of the Russian Far East, is among the most seismically active zones globally, experiencing frequent large and deep earthquakes. Experts believe this quake was triggered by deformation of the overriding North America Plate and related microplates.
Since 1900, the arc has witnessed 133 large earthquakes (over magnitude 7) and 12 great earthquakes (over magnitude 8), often leading to destructive tsunamis. The most powerful deep-focus quake in the area remains the May 24, 2013 (M8.3) event under the Sea of Okhotsk.
A day prior, mild tremors were also reported in Bhutan and Myanmar:
No casualties or damage have been reported so far from any of these events. Authorities continue to monitor the situation in the seismically volatile region.
