Kerala Tailor, 59, Reaches Everest Base Camp With No Formal Training, Thanks to YouTube
March 18, 2025: A Journey of Determination and Self-Preparation
In an extraordinary tale of perseverance, 59-year-old Vasanthi Cheruveettil, a tailor from Kerala, achieved a feat that many trained adventurers aspire to—reaching Everest Base Camp without any formal trekking experience. Relying on YouTube tutorials and self-training, she completed the challenging trek on February 23, 2025.

Starting her journey from Surke, Nepal, on February 15, Ms. Cheruveettil faced numerous hurdles but remained undeterred. Over four months, she meticulously prepared for the trek, developing endurance through three-hour morning walks and rigorous evening treks covering 5-6 kilometers. She also trained in trekking boots to adapt to rough terrains.
Despite skepticism from others, she equipped herself with basic trekking knowledge from YouTube and even learned Hindi to communicate better with locals. After a flight cancellation to Lukla, she met a German couple who helped her arrange a porter. With no professional guide, she navigated dangerous trails, pacing herself carefully to manage altitude sickness.

Upon reaching the 5,364-meter-high Everest Base Camp, Ms. Cheruveettil marked the moment by draping a traditional Kerala ‘kasavu’ saree over her trekking gear and waving the Indian flag.
This wasn’t her first solo expedition. In May 2024, she defied societal norms by traveling alone to Thailand. Encouraged by her sons, Vineeth and Vivek, she self-funded her trips through her tailoring business, with occasional support from her children.
Now, she has set her sights on another dream destination—The Great Wall of China.
“I will be 60 soon. I may travel in the future, but adventure treks like this may not be possible as age catches up,” she shared.
Her journey is even more inspiring considering the personal loss she has endured. She lost her husband, Lakshmanan, an electrician, to Alzheimer’s a year and a half ago.
Ms. Cheruveettil’s story is a testament to the power of self-belief, determination, and the idea that it is never too late to chase your dreams. She stands as an inspiration to adventurers and everyday individuals alike, proving that limitations exist only in the mind.
