Man Credits ChatGPT for Diagnosing Life-Threatening Illness, Claims It Saved His Life

The AI chatbot recognised symptoms of severe rhabdomyolysis, prompting the man to seek urgent medical care.

January 20, 2025: A Reddit user has claimed that the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT played a pivotal role in saving his life by identifying symptoms of a serious illness. According to the anonymous user, he experienced extreme soreness after a light workout and turned to ChatGPT for advice. The AI chatbot suggested that his symptoms matched those of moderate to severe rhabdomyolysis, a potentially life-threatening condition.

The condition, which involves the rapid breakdown of damaged muscle tissue, can lead to kidney damage, metabolic acidosis, and even death if untreated. Acting on ChatGPT’s advice, the man sought immediate medical care, where lab tests confirmed he had severe rhabdomyolysis.

“I stayed in the hospital for a week, receiving IV treatments and being closely monitored,” he wrote in his post. He added that ChatGPT’s analysis of his lab results closely matched the doctors’ findings, enabling him to understand his condition even before being formally briefed by medical professionals.

Internet Reactions
The story quickly went viral, with social media users applauding the responsible use of AI in health care. One user commented, “Happy to hear you’re alright. ChatGPT is amazing at such details.” Another added, “This is how GPT should be used—consult it, then confirm with a professional doctor.”

Some users even shared their own experiences of AI chatbots providing accurate diagnoses. One woman recounted how Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, successfully identified her daughter’s wrist fracture after it was initially overlooked by doctors. Thanks to Grok’s analysis, they sought a second opinion and received timely treatment, avoiding the need for surgery.
