Outrage in China Over Black Dogs’ Teeth Pulled Without Anaesthesia
June 25, 2025: A live stream from China depicting black dogs having their teeth forcibly pulled without anaesthesia has sparked widespread anger and condemnation online. The footage, shared on June 12, appears to show a traditional ritual believed to “ward off evil spirits” but has ignited serious concerns about animal cruelty.
A viewer from Jiangsu province, named Meng, came across the live stream showing individuals opening dogs’ mouths and extracting their teeth using rudimentary tools. Meng initially thought the teeth were fake but confirmed their authenticity after seeing blood-stained dog teeth and snouts wrapped in white material.
One vendor involved, identified as Li, claimed older black dogs’ teeth have stronger “spiritual power” to protect against bad luck. According to local folklore, these teeth are connected to the deity Erlang Shen and his loyal blackhound, Xiao Tianquan, believed to possess supernatural powers that fight evil spirits. The teeth are traditionally worn on scarlet threads or hung from windows and doors as protective amulets.
The live stream provoked a strong reaction on social media, with many users condemning the practice and questioning how such content was allowed online.
“These people have no conscience,” one comment read.
“How can live streams like this be permitted?” another user questioned.
Concerns were also raised about vendors allegedly collaborating with dog meat businesses, extracting teeth without anaesthesia to keep the meat suitable for consumption. Following public complaints, the offending product listings were taken down, and the live stream account was made private, although similar items continue to be sold on some online marketplaces.
Chinese law currently offers limited protection for domestic and stray animals, focusing mainly on wildlife preservation. This legal gap has made it difficult to curb cruelty toward dogs and other domestic animals.
The issue is particularly sensitive given the ongoing controversy surrounding events like the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, which attracts global criticism for its treatment of dogs.
When Meng questioned the tooth seller during the live stream, the vendor immediately blocked her, avoiding further scrutiny.
