February 18, 2025: Pope Francis’ Health: Doctors Modify Treatment Amid ‘Complex’ Infection
Pope Francis remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, as doctors adjust his treatment plan for a polymicrobial infection affecting his respiratory tract, the Vatican confirmed on Monday.
The 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church was admitted on Friday after battling a respiratory infection for over a week. While stable and without fever, medical professionals have determined that his condition requires a prolonged hospital stay.
“The tests conducted in recent days indicate a complex clinical situation, leading to a modification in therapy,” the Vatican statement read.
Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis has remained active, continuing to read official papers and communicate with global Catholic leaders.

“I am not well, but I’ll be back in a few days.”
“He is not an easy patient for doctors,” Romanelli added, referring to Francis’ constant engagement in work and conversation despite medical orders for rest.
Doctors have not yet confirmed whether Pope Francis’ infection is bacterial or viral, but have classified it as polymicrobial, meaning it is caused by multiple microorganisms.
