Two Indian Eateries Among Top 10 Legendary Restaurants Globally: Karims, Gulati Also Feature in Top 100
December 17, 2024: Seven Indian restaurants have secured a spot in the 100 Most Legendary Restaurants in the World list, released by the renowned food and travel guide, Taste Atlas, for 2024-25. Notably, two Indian establishments have earned spots in the top 10: Paragon Restaurant in Kozhikode, ranked 5th, and Peter Cat in Kolkata, ranked 7th.

Established in 1939 in Kozhikode (formerly Calicut), Paragon is celebrated for its roots in Malabar cuisine, particularly its iconic biryani. Over time, the restaurant expanded its offerings to include a more diverse menu and even opened outlets in Dubai.

Founded in 1975, Peter Cat is synonymous with its signature chelo kebab—a dish featuring grilled chicken and mutton kebabs, served with butter rice and a poached egg. The restaurant’s nostalgic Indo-Iranian cuisine and retro red-and-gold interiors make it a standout destination in Kolkata’s food scene.
Amrik Sukhdev, Murthal (Rank 13):
Famous for its aloo paratha, this dhaba-style restaurant, established in 1956, began as a stop for truck drivers but has evolved into a major food hotspot.
Karim’s, New Delhi (Rank 59):
A Mughlai institution since 1913, Karim’s legacy began with alu gosht and dal roti. Its original outlet remains iconic for Mughlai delicacies.
Central Tiffin Room (CTR), Bengaluru (Rank 69):
Established in 1920, CTR is celebrated for its masala dosa and continues to embody the charm of Old Bengaluru.
Gulati, New Delhi (Rank 77):
Originating as a humble dhaba in 1959, Gulati is renowned for its butter chicken and North Indian classics.
Ram Ashraya, Mumbai (Rank 78):
Known for its early-morning breakfast culture, this 1939-established eatery serves beloved South Indian dishes like upma, dosas, and various types of sheera.
The inclusion of Indian restaurants across regions highlights the diversity and enduring legacy of Indian cuisine. Taste Atlas also acknowledged Indian cuisine in other categories, including best breads, vegetable dishes, food regions, and top food cities globally.
