March 2, 2025: South Africa’s star left-arm seamer, Marco Jansen, shared his insights and thoughts on South Africa’s approach as they head into the knockout stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, following their dominant performance against England.
Having already secured a spot in the semi-finals after a thrilling win over England, South Africa is looking strong and determined to carry on their momentum into the crucial knockout rounds. While the occasion brings added hype, he emphasized that the core of the team’s mindset remains unchanged. “You try your processes… it’s just that in the semi-finals, you try and do that extraordinarily well,” Jansen said. He also praised the team’s collective performance against England, saying, “It was a good team performance all in all. As a bowling unit, we did what we set out to do, and the batters went out and did their job really nicely.”
Reflecting on his personal performance during the match, Jansen mentioned how the conditions didn’t offer much swing, and how he adjusted his strategy based on the changing conditions. “I was hoping for some swing, but there wasn’t too much in the air… for me, it was just backing my options,” he said. The 24-year-old cricketer explained that his focus was on hitting hard lengths rather than opting for fuller deliveries, especially when the ball got older. He also emphasized the importance of bowling with good intent, as it brings more energy to the ball and creates opportunities.
South Africa’s semi-final opponent will be determined after the match between New Zealand and India on Sunday. Depending on the result, South Africa will either face New Zealand or India in the semi-finals. Jansen highlighted that conditions and pitch types will dictate their lengths and strategies, but mentally, the team’s focus will remain on sticking to their processes.
“We’re just focused on doing what works in any situation, and trying to figure out what to do and what not to do as the game develops,” Jansen concluded, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to adapt and perform under pressure.
