IOA Optimistic for Favorable CAS Outcome in Vinesh Phogat’s Case

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is optimistic about a positive resolution regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerning her disqualification from the Women’s 50kg wrestling competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

As the case is currently sub-judice, the IOA refrained from providing specific details but confirmed that Sole Arbitrator Annabelle Bennett AC SC of Australia has conducted a thorough hearing. Over a three-hour session, all involved parties, including Phogat, the United World Wrestling (UWW), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the IOA as an interested party, presented their arguments.

Each party had the opportunity to submit detailed legal documents and make oral presentations. Following these submissions, Arbitrator Bennett indicated that a preliminary order may be issued soon, with a comprehensive written decision to follow.

Dr. PT Usha, President of the IOA, expressed gratitude towards the legal team, including Senior Advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, as well as the Krida Legal team for their support. “IOA deems it its duty to back Vinesh and would like to reaffirm its steadfast, unflinching, and unwavering support to her, regardless of the outcome of this matter. We are proud of her countless achievements on the wrestling mat throughout her stellar career,” Dr. Usha stated.

Vinesh Phogat, who had advanced to the gold medal bout by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals, faced disqualification on the following day for exceeding the weight limit. Her final opponent was set to be the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. The disqualification led to an emotional announcement from Phogat on Thursday, marking her retirement from wrestling.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Phogat reflected on her departure from the sport: “Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”

The IOA’s continued support for Phogat highlights their commitment to backing athletes in times of adversity, underscoring their belief in her deserving recognition despite the disqualification.
