Prior to the game, Taijul Islam took ten wickets for Bangladesh, including six in the second innings, helping the team win by 150 runs at Sylhet, their first-ever home Test victory over New Zealand.
By doing this, the Tigers secure vital World Test Championship (WTC) points and take a 1-0 lead in the two-game series.

Having won the toss, Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to bat first. Even though the wicket had some turn, Bangladesh’s top order attempted to take advantage of the favourable batting conditions. In addition to Mominul Haque’s 37 runs at the top of the order and Shanto’s 86 in 166 balls with 11 fours, Mahmudul Hasan Joy also made significant contributions to the score.
New Zealand mounted a strong defence, captained by Glenn Phillips (4/53), and Bangladesh collapsed from a robust 180/2 to 310 all out. Ish Sodhi and Southee each claimed one wicket, but Kyle Jamieson and spinner Ajaz Patel claimed two.
With Daryl Mitchell (41) and Glenn Phillips (42) adding four more fours to his 104 in 205 balls, Kane Williamson gave the tourists a seven-run lead.

Mominul Haque (3/4), the batter, and Taijul Islam (4/109) were the two most notable performers for Bangladesh. In 101.5 overs, NZ was bowled out for 317 in their opening innings.
Bangladesh was able to set a target of 332 in the second innings thanks to a brave century from captain Najmul (105 in 198 balls, with 10 fours) and a solid fifty from Mushfiqur Rahim (67). Bangladesh led the match by 331 runs when they were bowled out for 338.
Leading the Kiwi bowling attack was Ajaz (4/148), with wickets coming from Ish Sodhi, Phillips, and captain Tim Southee.

After Bangladeshi spinners attacked, the tourists gave up and folded for 181, even though Daryl Mitchell (58), Sodhi (22) and Southee (34), put up a valiant fight towards the end. With 6/75, Taijul once again stood out. ‘Player of the Match’ went to Taijul.
