Odisha CM Mohan Majhi Honors Indian Hockey Team for Historic Bronze at Paris Olympics

On Wednesday, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Indian men’s hockey team at a grand felicitation ceremony held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. This celebration honored the team’s remarkable achievement of winning back-to-back bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, a feat not accomplished in 52 years.

Under the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian team secured their second consecutive bronze medal with a 2-1 victory over Spain. This historic achievement marks the first time since the 1972 Munich Games that India has won consecutive bronze medals in hockey at the Olympics.

In a candid conversation with reporters, Harmanpreet Singh expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from the people of Odisha. “I am very happy. Whenever we come to Odisha, we receive immense love. This time, the support has been even more profound. The arrangements here are excellent, and the grounds are in great condition,” Harmanpreet remarked, acknowledging the Odisha government’s significant contribution to their success.

In recognition of their extraordinary performance, the Odisha government has announced generous rewards for the team. Amit Rohidas, one of the standout players, will receive a cash reward of Rs 4 crore. Each member of the Indian hockey team will be awarded Rs 15 lakh, while the support staff will receive Rs 10 lakh each.

The Indian team, guided by coach Craig Fulton, overcame a challenging start to the match against Spain. Despite trailing 0-1 after the first quarter, the team rallied with two crucial goals from Harmanpreet Singh (30′ and 33′) to secure the bronze medal. Marc Miralles scored Spain’s only goal (18′) in an electrifying game that saw India triumph against the odds.

Emotions ran high as veteran goalkeeper Sreejesh played his final game for India, and the team gathered to celebrate their significant achievement in Indian hockey history. Harmanpreet Singh’s impressive performance throughout the tournament made him the leading goal-scorer with 10 goals in eight matches, surpassing Australia’s Blake Govers by three goals.

The Indian team finished 71st in the overall Paris Olympics medals tally, while the United States led with a total of 126 medals. This bronze medal victory not only highlights the team’s dedication and skill but also reinforces the strong sporting spirit of India.
