The Significance and History of Dhanteras: A Celebration of Wealth and Prosperity

October 26, 2024: Dhanteras, the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, holds immense historical and cultural significance in India. Celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Ashwin, Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali festivities. This year, it falls on October 28, 2024.

The word “Dhanteras” is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Dhan,” meaning wealth, and “Teras,” signifying the thirteenth day. It is a day dedicated to honoring and seeking blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. On this auspicious day, people buy gold, silver, and new utensils, as it is believed that these purchases bring good luck, financial growth, and prosperity throughout the year.

Mythological Significance

The celebration of Dhanteras is rooted in Hindu mythology. According to legend, it is believed that on this day, Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and medicine, emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) with a pot of nectar (Amrit). Hence, Dhanteras is also seen as a day to honor health and well-being.

Another popular myth involves the story of King Hima’s son. According to the story, it was predicted that he would die from a snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage. However, his clever wife prevented this fate by placing gold coins and lighting oil lamps at the entrance of their home. The dazzling shine blinded Yama, the god of death, who was unable to enter their house. Therefore, Dhanteras is also associated with longevity and protection from evil forces.

Cultural Importance and Celebrations

Dhanteras is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. People clean their homes, draw colorful Rangolis, and light diyas (earthen lamps) to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and seek her blessings for wealth and prosperity. It is also an auspicious time to buy precious metals like gold and silver, as it symbolizes inviting prosperity and wealth into the home.

In the evening, devotees perform a special Lakshmi Puja, where they pray for health, wealth, and success in their endeavors. The rituals often include offerings of sweets, flowers, and incense. Businesses and shops also start their new accounting year on this day, reflecting a fresh beginning.

Conclusion

Dhanteras is a day that intertwines spirituality, tradition, and cultural practices. It emphasizes the importance of health, wealth, and well-being. The festival’s deep-rooted myths, combined with vibrant customs, continue to hold a special place in the hearts of millions, symbolizing the timeless belief that wealth and prosperity are the results of hard work, blessings, and the divine grace of Goddess Lakshmi.
