Winters offer an abundance of chills, thrills, fun and frolic. While it’s the time for festivities and joy, it also happens to be that time of the year when we need to take extra care of our body and health.

Aligning itself to the well-being of our patrons and subscribers, Live India, is embarking on a series on Health, Fitness and Medical advise with Specialist Doctors from Manipal Group of Hospitals, the 2nd largest healthcare provider in India, with over 28 hospitals.

In this Video, Dr Dixit Garg, Consultant Intervention, Cardiology, Manipal Hospitals, Palam Vihar, Gurugram, shares with us 5 Important tips to take care of your heart in the harsh months of winters.

Tip-1: Keep warm

It is extremely important to keep your hands, feet and the rest of the body warm and be comfortable at all times. Special care for the elderly must be taken as they are more susceptible to heart ailments in this season.

Tip-2: Watch that Blood Pressure

Blood pressure tends to inch up in the winter months, so if you are over 35 years of age, it is advisable to get it checked every now and then to ensure everything is fine and OK.

It is not advisable to let symptoms manifest to identify the problem, regular check-ups are easy and go a long way in keeping the heart in good shape.

Incase of the aged, or people suffering from High Blood Pressure, they need to more diligent in their precautions.

Blood Pressure monitoring should be more regular and a consultation with a Specialist Doctor is advised.

Remember, High blood pressure may require tinkering with the quantity of the medicines and that should be done under the able guidance of a qualified Doctor.

Tip-3: Regular Check-ups

Retaining the theme of the last tip, regular check-ups are also a must for all people who have in the past, complaint of Heart Ailments or trouble.

They may require lifestyle modifications or medication supplementation in this weather.

Tip-4: Do Not Ignore Symptoms

Most of us attempt to steer clear of panic and in the process start reassuring ourselves that all is alright with us, which may or may not be the case.

Remember, if morning walks or walks in general are causing discomfort, or you sense breathless after any physical activity post lunch or while climbing stairs etc., these maybe signs that should not go ignored.

Immediate consultation with a Cardiologist followed by ECG, TMT, ECO etc. are strongly recommended.

Catching and recognising the symptoms early, go a long way in preempting a Heart Attack and saving oneself from a potentially fatal situation.

Tip-5: Eat Healthy & Stay Fit

Winters is all about good food, merriment and outdoor actvities. We tend to overeat and indulge in comfort foods. We often order in or go out to eat fried delicacies, day in and day out. While festivities are important for the mind and body, moderation must be key for one and all.

So, make these 5-tips your winter mantra and live life- healthy and free!
