When Ratan Tata Opened Up About Why He Never Married: ‘I Came Close But It Didn’t Work Out’
India mourns the loss of Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Group, who passed away at the age of 86. A titan in business and philanthropy, Tata was also admired for his humility and private life. In an interview with Simi Garewal on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, he once reflected on his decision not to marry, discussing loneliness and the idea of having a family.
Ratan Tata on Marriage and Loneliness
In his candid conversation with Simi, Ratan Tata shared, “There were many things that kept me from marrying — timing, being absorbed in work. I came close to getting married a few times, but it didn’t work out.” He admitted to feeling lonely at times, saying, “There are moments when I feel lonely about not having a wife or a family, and I long for it. But other times, I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about anyone else’s concerns or feelings. Yet, loneliness does creep in.”
Ratan Tata’s First Love
Tata also spoke about a significant chapter in his life during a chat with Humans of Bombay, revealing that he nearly got married in Los Angeles. “It was in LA that I fell in love and almost got married. But I decided to move back to India temporarily, as my grandmother wasn’t well. I thought the person I wanted to marry would join me, but her parents were not comfortable with the idea due to the 1962 Indo-China war. The relationship, unfortunately, ended there.”
