Varun Chakravarthy Reflects on “Rebirth” After Returning to T20Is for India

Varun Chakravarthy made an impactful comeback to international cricket, describing his return to the T20I stage as a “rebirth” after a three-year hiatus. Playing for India in the first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior, Varun showcased his bowling prowess by taking three crucial wickets in his four-over spell, helping to restrict the visitors to a modest total of 127.

Before his return against Bangladesh, Varun last represented India in 2021 during a T20I match against Scotland. Reflecting on his comeback, the spinner admitted that it was an emotional moment for him to don the Indian jersey again. “After three long years, it was definitely emotional for me. It feels like a rebirth to be back in the Blues,” Varun told ESPNcricinfo.

He emphasized the challenges of staying relevant in the highly competitive Indian cricket landscape, where maintaining top form is crucial for a place in the squad. “Once you are not in the Indian side, people tend to write you off very easily. You need to stay at the highest level and keep knocking on the door,” he added. Varun expressed gratitude for the opportunity and is focused on delivering consistent performances moving forward.

Varun also spoke about his approach to the game, emphasizing his desire to “stick to the process” that has served him well in the IPL. He said, “I just want to stay in the present. That’s why I don’t want to think too much or express too much.”

The first T20I saw India win the toss and opt to field. Bangladesh’s top scorers, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, managed 27 and 35 runs* respectively, but the team struggled to build momentum, finishing with 127 runs. Arshdeep Singh and Varun led India’s bowling efforts, each taking three wickets, ensuring a dominant position for India throughout the match.

With Varun’s return adding depth to the Indian bowling attack, the team looks well-prepared to continue their strong performance in the upcoming matches of the series.
