11 Indian Nationals Die in Georgia’s Gudauri: Embassy Confirms

Indian Embassy assures prompt repatriation as Georgian authorities investigate cause of tragic incident.

Tbilisi [Georgia], December 17: The Embassy of India in Georgia confirmed the tragic deaths of 11 Indian nationals in Gudauri, Georgia, and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

In a press release shared on social media platform X, the Indian Embassy stated, “The Embassy of India in Tbilisi is saddened to learn of the unfortunate passing of eleven Indian nationals in Gudauri, Georgia, and extends its deepest condolences to their families.”

The Embassy further assured that it is working closely with local authorities to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains to India. It also emphasized its commitment to supporting the grieving families.

Incident Under Investigation

The tragic incident reportedly occurred in an Indian restaurant in Gudauri. Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs is actively investigating the case under Article 116 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to negligent manslaughter.

In a statement on December 14, Georgian authorities explained that the bodies of 12 individuals—11 foreign nationals and one Georgian citizen—were discovered in a resting area on the restaurant's second floor. Initial assessments revealed no visible injuries or signs of violence.

The Ministry noted that a power generator was operating in an enclosed indoor space near the bedrooms, likely turned on following a power outage. Authorities suspect that carbon monoxide poisoning could have been a contributing factor, although forensic examinations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.

Indian Embassy Assures Support

The Indian Embassy had earlier expressed its condolences and pledged all possible assistance. “Mission is in touch with the local authorities to get details of the Indian nationals who lost their lives. All possible assistance will be given,” the Embassy had posted on X.

The Indian government remains in contact with local Georgian authorities to expedite the necessary processes and provide support to the victims' families.
