Alaska Airlines Cancels Flights After Major IT Failure Disrupts Operations
July 22, 2025: Alaska Airlines has canceled more than 150 flights — including 64 on Monday alone — following a system-wide ground stop caused by a critical IT hardware failure late Sunday night.
The disruption began around 8 p.m. Pacific Time when a crucial piece of multi-redundant hardware at the airline’s data centers unexpectedly failed, forcing all Alaska and Horizon Air flights to halt for nearly three hours. Although operations resumed by 11 p.m., the fallout is expected to continue for several days.

“Additional flight disruptions are likely as we reposition aircraft and crews throughout our network,” the Seattle-based airline said in a statement.
Alaska Airlines emphasized that the incident is not linked to recent cybersecurity concerns, such as the Microsoft server attack over the weekend or the June breach involving its Hawaiian Airlines subsidiary.
While the airline did not disclose which specific systems were impacted, the failed third-party hardware affected several core functions necessary for flight operations. Alaska is now working with the vendor to replace the equipment and stabilize its network.
Travelers are urged to stay updated on flight changes, as more cancellations and delays may follow during the recovery.
