"Such Misleading Statements Damage Bangladesh's Reputation," Says Interim Government
Bangladesh condemns US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s claims, calling them baseless and unfairly generalizing the nation.
Bangladesh Denounces Gabbard’s ‘Islamist Caliphate’ Claims
The Bangladesh interim government has strongly condemned the recent remarks made by US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard, in which she alleged that the country was being influenced by Islamist extremism and a caliphate agenda. The government called her statements “misleading and damaging” to Bangladesh’s global image.
"This statement is both misleading and damaging to the image and reputation of Bangladesh, a nation whose traditional practice of Islam has been famously inclusive and peaceful. Bangladesh has made remarkable strides in its fight against extremism and terrorism," the government said in an official statement.
Gabbard made these comments during an Indian television interview, discussing the ideology of an “Islamic caliphate” and its impact on various countries, including Bangladesh.
“Statements Not Based on Evidence” – Bangladesh Responds
The Bangladeshi government dismissed Gabbard’s allegations, emphasizing that they were not backed by any facts or concrete evidence.
"Gabbard's comments are not based on any evidence or specific allegations. They paint an entire nation with a broad and unjustified brush," the statement read.
The government also highlighted Bangladesh’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts, including its collaboration with international partners like the US to tackle extremism through law enforcement, social reforms, and strategic policies.
"Like many other countries, Bangladesh has faced challenges of extremism, but it has consistently worked in partnership with the international community to address these issues."
“Bangladesh Rejects Any Links to Islamist Caliphate”
The Bangladeshi government also expressed concern that such statements could undermine the nation’s efforts in fostering peace and stability.
"Bangladesh strongly condemns any efforts to link the country to any form of 'Islamist caliphate’."
It further urged political leaders like Gabbard to rely on accurate information when discussing sensitive geopolitical matters, warning that such remarks could fuel unnecessary tensions and reinforce harmful stereotypes.
"Public figures should ensure their statements are based on actual knowledge and avoid fanning fears or stoking sectarian tensions."
Gabbard’s Remarks on Global Terrorism and South Asia
Responding to ANI’s query about repeated terror attacks on India from Pakistan, Gabbard stated that the Trump administration remains committed to combating Islamist terrorism worldwide.
“President Trump, through his first administration and now, has been very clear about his commitment to defeating Islamist terrorism, which continues to pose a direct threat to the American people.”
She also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s firm stance on terrorism, adding that the US and India would continue working together on counterterrorism measures.
“We see how this threat is impacting people in India, Bangladesh, Syria, Israel, and across the Middle East. Prime Minister Modi takes this threat seriously, and our nations will collaborate to eliminate it.”
Bangladesh’s Commitment to Global Peace
Despite rejecting Gabbard’s claims, the Bangladeshi interim government reaffirmed its dedication to global security and counterterrorism efforts.
"Bangladesh remains committed to engaging in constructive dialogue based on facts and respect for the sovereignty and security of all nations."
The government emphasized that cooperation with the US and other global allies would continue in combating extremism while ensuring that misleading statements do not harm Bangladesh’s international standing.
