BNP May Invite Modi To Tarique’s Swearing-In

Post-poll outreach seen as reset in India–Bangladesh ties

February 14, 2026: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is reportedly planning to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the swearing-in ceremony of its leader Tarique Rahman after the party’s decisive electoral victory. The move is being viewed as a positive signal for bilateral relations following years of strain under the previous regime. Responding to Modi’s congratulatory message, the BNP thanked him and said the mandate reflected the trust of the Bangladeshi people in democratic governance.

The party reiterated its commitment to democratic values, inclusivity and progressive development, expressing hope for constructive engagement with India. In a statement, the BNP said it looked forward to advancing the multifaceted relationship between the two countries, guided by mutual respect, sensitivity to each other’s concerns and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.

A day earlier, Modi confirmed holding a phone conversation with Tarique Rahman, further underlining diplomatic outreach between the two sides. If a formal invitation is extended and accepted, the Indian Prime Minister’s presence at the ceremony would mark a significant moment in India–Bangladesh relations. No official date for the swearing-in or confirmation of attendance by foreign leaders has yet been announced.
