Party says request will be pursued through diplomatic channels after poll victory
February 13, 2026: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has renewed its demand for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India following its sweeping electoral victory. Senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said the party would formally pursue the matter through diplomatic channels, emphasising that the issue should be handled between the foreign ministries of both countries under existing extradition frameworks.
Hasina has been residing in New Delhi since her ouster after the August 2024 mass uprising. In 2025, a special tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced her to death in absentia over charges related to the violent crackdown during the unrest. Political tensions escalated further after she addressed supporters from Delhi in early 2026, urging protests against the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus.
The renewed extradition push comes amid Hasina’s criticism of the recent elections as a “sham,” even as BNP leaders signalled willingness to maintain normal bilateral ties with India based on equality and mutual respect. New Delhi has earlier acknowledged receiving extradition-related communication and stated that the matter is under examination in accordance with legal and judicial procedures.
