Can Heatwave Break The 100° Spell In Southern New England? Friday Holds the Key

Southern New England Braces for “Impact Weather Day” on Friday: Extreme Heat, Humidity, and Thunderstorm Threat

BOSTON, MA – July 23, 2025 – Residents across Southern New England are preparing for a challenging end to the week as StormTeam 5 has officially declared Friday an “Impact Weather Day.” This designation signals a significant disruption to daily routines due to a potent combination of high temperatures, oppressive humidity, and the potential for severe thunderstorms.

A Heat Advisory has been issued for most of Southern New England, excluding the Berkshires, South Coast, and Cape Cod. This advisory will take effect on Thursday at 11 a.m. and remain in force through Friday at 8 p.m.

The peak of this hot and humid spell is expected to hit on Friday, with forecast highs soaring into the low to mid-90s. However, the true concern lies with the heat index – what the temperature feels like when factoring in the moisture in the air. This “feels like” temperature is projected to climb to a sweltering 100 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Contributing to this oppressive sensation will be tropical humidity levels, with dew points expected to be in the 70s. This elevated humidity is set to dominate the weather pattern from Thursday, extending through Friday and into the upcoming weekend.

Adding to the complexity of the forecast, an approaching cold front is anticipated to trigger thunderstorms on Friday evening. While the risk of severe weather appears to be stronger in northern New England, parts of southern New England could still experience powerful storms. These storms carry the potential for drenching downpours and damaging straight-line winds, posing a threat to property and outdoor activities.

“Areas north of the Pike will have the potential for soaking downpours,” warned StormTeam 5 meteorologist KellyAnn Cicalese. “We’re looking at a risk for damaging, straightline winds.”

The unsettled weather is expected to persist throughout the weekend, with scattered showers and storms remaining a possibility on both Saturday and Sunday. Despite the chances for precipitation, forecasters are not anticipating a complete washout of the entire weekend. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned environments, and monitor local weather updates closely.
