Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Likely to Announce Resignation Amid Rising Dissent: Report

Speculation grows as sources hint at Trudeau stepping down ahead of a crucial Liberal caucus meeting to avoid perception of being ousted

Ottawa [Canada], January 6: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party on Monday, amid escalating dissent within his party, according to The Globe and Mail.

Sources familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Trudeau aims to step down ahead of a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday. This move is reportedly intended to avoid the perception that he was forced out by his party’s MPs.

One insider, who recently spoke with the Prime Minister, emphasized Trudeau’s understanding of the importance of controlling the narrative around his departure. However, there remains uncertainty about the exact timing of his resignation and whether he will continue serving as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.

Leadership Transition Unclear

The Liberal Party’s national executive committee, responsible for overseeing leadership transitions, is expected to convene later this week after the caucus meeting. The timeline and strategy for selecting Trudeau’s successor remain unclear.

The Liberal caucus is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, with increasing calls from MPs for Trudeau to step down. Parliament is set to reconvene on January 27, and opposition parties have already signaled their intent to challenge the government at the earliest opportunity.

Political Unrest in Canada

Canada’s political landscape has been turbulent in recent months. On December 16, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced her resignation.

In her resignation letter to Trudeau, Freeland wrote:
“It has been the honour of my life to serve in government, working for Canada and Canadians. We have accomplished a lot together. However, you made it clear that I no longer credibly enjoy your confidence. Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet.”

Following Freeland’s resignation, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh publicly called for Trudeau to step down, hinting at the possibility of supporting a non-confidence motion against the government.

What Lies Ahead?

As the Liberal Party faces internal challenges and rising opposition pressure, Trudeau’s resignation, if confirmed, would mark the end of an era in Canadian politics. The focus will now shift to how the party manages the leadership transition and prepares for potential early elections.

Political analysts suggest that Trudeau’s exit could reshape Canada’s political future, leaving the Liberal Party at a critical crossroads.
