Coup Rumours in Bangladesh: Army Chief General Zaman’s Meetings Spark Political Turmoil

As Bangladesh grapples with rising unrest, rumours of a military intervention intensify amid army chief’s warnings and silence from interim leadership.

March 25, 2025: Speculation of a potential military coup has gripped Bangladesh, fueled by a series of high-level military meetings, security deployments in Dhaka, and intensifying protests against the interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

At the center of these swirling rumours is General Wakar Uz Zaman, Bangladesh’s Army Chief, whose recent statements and public silence have only added to the intrigue. Over the past 24 hours, social media platforms and local news outlets have seen a surge in chatter pointing to a possible military intervention, citing concerns over failing law and order, extremism, and political instability.

Sources close to the military indicate that General Zaman convened meetings with top army brass over the weekend, reportedly to discuss national security threats and rising extremism. His public warning last month—now widely circulated again—spoke of “enough is enough” and a desire to “return to the barracks after placing the country in a good place.”

Meanwhile, Nasimul Haque Gani, the Home Secretary in the interim government, has dismissed the rumours as “gossip” and denied any declaration of emergency.

Yet, tensions remain high following accusations by Asaduzzaman Fuad, leader of the student-led Aamar Bangladesh Party, who alleged that the Army Chief is conspiring with President Mohammed Shahbuddin to establish a parallel interim government. Fuad’s fiery remarks referenced the political exile of former PM Sheikh Hasina and evoked the martyrdom of activist Abu Syed, a symbol of the 2024 pro-reform uprising.

Interestingly, reports last week hinted at unrest within the army itself, with suggestions of internal challenges to General Zaman’s authority by pro-Pakistan factions. For now, however, General Zaman appears to have consolidated control.

Despite official denials, the optics of increased military movement, political accusations, and lack of transparency from leadership continue to deepen public distrust.

Bangladesh, a nation at a pivotal crossroads, now finds itself under intense domestic and international scrutiny. Whether this moment results in a constitutional reset, a military intervention, or a hard reset in governance remains to be seen.
