Donald Trump Calls Taiwan a ‘Major Issue for World Peace’ in Meeting with Akie Abe

US-Taiwan Relations and Regional Security Take Center Stage Ahead of Trump’s Incoming Administration

Florida [US], December 23: US President-elect Donald Trump has described Taiwan as a ‘major issue for world peace’ during a meeting with Akie Abe, the widow of late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, according to Taipei Times.

The meeting, held on December 15 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, addressed pressing global concerns, including the Russo-Ukrainian war and rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s Strategic Importance Highlighted

Trump emphasized the global significance of Taiwan, underlining the potential impact of a Taiwan-China conflict on global stability. This remark signals the incoming administration’s focus on Taiwan as a critical geopolitical issue.

Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeshi Iwaya stated that diplomatic engagements between Trump and Japanese officials are anticipated soon:

“We want to create an opportunity to exchange opinions as soon as possible and at a mutually convenient time.”

During the meeting, Trump gifted Akie Abe a photo book with the word “peace” inscribed inside, intended for Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Japanese media reports suggest that Ishiba might visit the US next month ahead of Trump’s inauguration to discuss shared priorities.

US Arms Sale to Taiwan: Strategic Support Continues

In parallel developments, Rupert Hammond-Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council (USTBC), commented on the latest US arms sale to Taiwan, worth USD 265 million.

The sale includes:

  • 309 Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio Systems Variant 5
  • Integration support for Taiwan’s Patriot missile defense systems and F-16 Block 20 jets

This deal marks the 19th arms sale approved by the Biden administration to Taiwan, reinforcing Washington’s commitment to regional security and its allies, including Israel and Ukraine.

Hammond-Chambers acknowledged the importance of these arms sales but expressed concern about their limited scope:

“While the constant flow of support has material and political benefits, it has, regrettably, been overly narrow in response to the totality of the threat posed by China’s military forces.”

Future Prospects Under Lai Ching-te’s Leadership

Looking forward, Hammond-Chambers predicted that Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te would adopt an ambitious agenda with the Trump administration, including:

  • Increased defense spending
  • Requests for advanced military platforms and systems
  • Enhanced coast guard resources and training programs

This proactive stance signals Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense capabilities amid rising tensions with China.

As the incoming Trump administration prepares to address these challenges, Taiwan remains a key focal point in US foreign policy, with significant implications for regional and global security.
