Donald Trump proposes shared control of Strait of Hormuz with Iran as talks progress

March 24, 2026: Donald Trump has indicated that the Strait of Hormuz could soon reopen, suggesting it may be jointly managed by the United States and Iran. Speaking to reporters, Trump said ongoing discussions with Tehran were making progress and could stabilise one of the world’s most critical shipping routes. He also mentioned the possibility of coordinating with Iran’s leadership, including Mojtaba Khamenei, to manage the passage.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital artery for global energy trade, handling nearly a quarter of seaborne oil shipments. However, the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has made transit through the region increasingly risky. Trump also claimed that early strikes had weakened Iran’s top leadership, hinting at the possibility of a significant political shift, while noting that recent talks suggest tensions could ease.

In a sign of diplomatic momentum, Trump announced a temporary pause on US strikes targeting Iranian power and energy infrastructure for five days. In a post on Truth Social, he described recent conversations between Washington and Tehran as “very good and productive,” adding that discussions would continue. The pause, he said, reflects the constructive tone of negotiations, even as the broader conflict in the region enters its fourth week.
