The deep-sea creature is rarely seen at the ocean’s surface, and according to centuries-old beliefs, its sudden appearance can be a precursor to earthquakes or other natural disasters. A viral video showing seven fishermen struggling to hold the elongated, silver-bodied fish with its vivid red crest has taken social media by storm.

The Myth vs. Science
In Japan, there’s a long-standing superstition that oarfish surface before seismic events, possibly due to their sensitivity to underwater disturbances. In fact, several oarfish sightings have historically preceded major earthquakes in Japan. However, scientific research has yet to confirm any link between the fish’s behavior and geological activity.
Marine experts suggest that oarfish rise to the surface only when they are sick, dying, or occasionally to breed, making such sightings naturally rare.
