Fatal Mass Shooting Rocks Atlanta's Edgewood Avenue, One Dead And Ten Injured
Atlanta, GA, US – July 28, 2025 – A chaotic and violent scene unfolded along Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta from late Sunday into Monday morning, as police responded to a mass shooting incident that left one person dead and ten others injured. The incident marks a significant escalation in a weekend marred by gun violence across the city, bringing the total number of people shot since Thursday to over 30.
Atlanta Police Captain Jeff Childers reported that officers arrived at the 300 block of Edgewood Avenue, a bustling nightlife strip located in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood, around 1:30 a.m. Monday. There, they discovered a 27-year-old man deceased from his injuries. The other ten victims, whose ages range from 18 to 29, were all believed to be in stable condition as of 5:30 a.m., though at least one individual was undergoing surgery.
Details regarding the exact unfolding of the shooting remain limited. Captain Childers could not immediately confirm if there were multiple shooters involved but stated that investigators believe the suspect or suspects were on foot. “Several shell casings” were found at the scene, indicating a significant exchange of gunfire.
Adding to the unsettling nature of the incident, a local resident told 11Alive’s Dan Kennedy that she observed a group of armed individuals wearing backpacks in the middle of Edgewood Avenue late Sunday night, seemingly looking into cars as they drove by.
This mass shooting was not an isolated event on Edgewood Avenue that night. Captain Childers mentioned at least two other separate shooting incidents in the vicinity, though they are not currently believed to be related to the larger mass shooting. In one instance, an individual was found shot multiple times at the intersection of Edgewood and Hilliard Street, stemming from what police described as a parking dispute. This victim was transported to Grady Hospital and is in stable condition. In another separate incident, a person sustained an ankle wound at Edgewood and Boulevard, also in stable condition.
Adding to the city’s grim start to the week, a death investigation is also underway near Edgewood at the Freedom Parkway ramp connecting to I-75/85. As of now, there is no indication that this investigation is linked to the mass shooting.
The Sweet Auburn neighborhood, located east of downtown Atlanta, is historically significant as a vibrant African-American business and entertainment district, closely associated with the Civil Rights Movement and home to the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site. Edgewood Avenue, which runs through the heart of Sweet Auburn, is known for its street art, popular bars, eateries, and the Sweet Auburn Curb Market.
This latest surge in violence contrasts with broader crime trends reported recently in Atlanta. As of mid-year 2025, Atlanta had seen a 32% drop in homicides compared to the same period in 2024, outpacing the national decline. Overall crime rates and vehicle thefts have also reportedly decreased. However, this weekend’s events underscore the ongoing challenges the city faces in combating gun violence and ensuring public safety, especially in popular nightlife areas.
