A French-linked vessel crosses the Strait of Hormuz as Emmanuel Macron criticises Donald Trump over rhetoric on the crisis.

April 3, 2026: A container ship linked to French shipping giant CMA CGM successfully navigated the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, even as tensions in the region remain high. The Maltese-flagged vessel Kribi crossed the strait on Thursday, at a time when maritime traffic has been severely disrupted due to Iran’s actions following the US-Israel offensive. Notably, the ship continued broadcasting “owner France” on its transponder, drawing attention to its passage amid the ongoing standoff.

The development came shortly after Emmanuel Macron dismissed calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz through military means, calling such an approach “unrealistic.” He warned that any forceful intervention would be time-consuming and risky, citing potential threats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and their missile capabilities. In contrast, Donald Trump has urged countries dependent on the route for energy supplies to take responsibility for securing the passage.

Macron also took a sharp swipe at Trump’s public statements, criticising what he described as inconsistent messaging and excessive commentary. Without naming him directly at times, the French president stressed the need for stability and seriousness in global diplomacy, saying the situation “isn’t a show.” The remarks come amid broader tensions between Western allies over how to respond to the escalating Middle East conflict and ensure the safety of one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
