Iran’s strikes on refineries and LNG sites raise fears of wider regional conflict and global energy shock

March 19, 2026: The Middle East conflict has intensified sharply, with Iran targeting key energy infrastructure across the Gulf region. Oil refineries in Saudi Arabia, LNG facilities in Qatar, and sites in Kuwait were hit in a series of coordinated attacks, triggering fires and widespread damage. The escalation follows earlier strikes on Iran’s South Pars gas field, pushing the conflict into a full-scale energy war with global implications.

Saudi Arabia has warned it may respond militarily if attacks continue, with Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stating that the kingdom “reserves the right” to act. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump cautioned that Iran’s South Pars gas field could face destruction if strikes persist. Despite Saudi forces intercepting multiple drones over Riyadh, tensions remain high, with Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz hinting at further action after the reported killing of Iranian intelligence chief Esmail Khatib.

Global concern is mounting as civilian casualties emerge and diplomatic pressure increases. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an immediate halt to strikes on civilian infrastructure, while Iraq-based Kataeb Hezbollah has offered a temporary pause under conditions. Energy markets have already reacted, with European gas prices surging up to 35% after Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility suffered heavy damage, raising fears of a prolonged supply crisis.
