Hanuman Statue Sparks Texas Row
Republican activist’s remarks on Sugar Land monument trigger immigration, faith debate
February 19, 2026: A 90-foot Hanuman statue in Sugar Land has become the centre of a political controversy after Republican activist Carlos Turcios posted a video of the monument on X, referring to immigrants as “3rd World aliens.” Sharing footage of the statue at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple, Turcios wrote that “Third World aliens are slowly taking over Texas and America,” drawing immediate backlash from social media users who called the remarks inflammatory and xenophobic. The post quickly escalated into a broader debate over immigration, assimilation and religious freedom in the United States.
The statue, known as the Panchaloha Abhaya Hanuman, was unveiled in 2024 and is regarded as one of the tallest Hindu statues in the US. Envisioned by spiritual leader Sri Chinnajeeyar Swamiji, temple authorities describe it as a symbol of devotion, strength and cultural identity meant to promote peace and unity. Supporters online defended the temple’s right to worship freely, arguing that the monument represents faith rather than politics and does not pose a threat to American society.
The controversy has reignited wider conversations about pluralism and identity in the US. While critics of Turcios accused him of targeting immigrant and Hindu communities, others framed the issue as part of ongoing debates about cultural change and national identity. The statue remains a prominent landmark in Sugar Land, symbolising religious devotion for many and serving as a flashpoint in America’s continuing discussions on diversity and freedom of belief.
