Rising tensions over Strait of Hormuz spark global calls for restraint and dialogue

April 3, 2026: On the 35th day of the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major global flashpoint, prompting strong reactions from world powers. The European Union has asserted that Iran holds no legal authority to impose fees on commercial vessels, warning that such a move would violate international maritime law.

The United Nations has also stepped in, reaffirming the principle of unhindered passage through international sea routes. With nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments passing through the Strait, concerns are mounting over potential disruptions to global trade and energy supply chains as tensions escalate.

Amid the crisis, the United Kingdom is coordinating with around 60 nations, including India, to push for reopening the route through diplomatic means. France has echoed similar calls for restraint. While Iran has maintained a firm stance, global leaders continue to emphasize dialogue over conflict, as markets and governments closely watch for a breakthrough.
