May 15, 2025: At the inauguration of the Embassy of Honduras in New Delhi on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored India’s deepening engagement with Latin America, highlighting a new milestone in Global South cooperation: the installation of a disaster early warning system in Honduras.
Developed by India’s Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the advanced system is designed to enhance Honduras’s disaster preparedness and resilience. Jaishankar said this initiative exemplifies how India is sharing its developmental experience and technological innovation with fellow nations in the Global South.
“We are now engaged in installing an early warning system developed by C-DOT aimed at strengthening Honduras’s preparedness for disaster resilience,” he stated. “Our discussions today, and in previous meetings, have particularly focused on health and capacity building.”
He also acknowledged Honduras’s consistent support for India on the international stage, particularly at the United Nations and in other multilateral forums, calling their cooperation “meaningful and valued.”
The Minister praised the Indian diaspora in Honduras, describing it as a “small but vibrant” community that not only contributes to the local economy but also fosters cultural connections, particularly through yoga and Indian wellness practices.
Jaishankar reflected on India’s growing focus on Latin America and the Caribbean since he assumed the ministerial role six years ago, noting that New Delhi has significantly expanded its diplomatic and development footprint in the region. “When I became minister, I promised many of your predecessors that we would invest deeper energies here. Today, we see the results.”
He emphasized that the opening of the Honduran Embassy in Delhi symbolizes both nations’ intent to unlock the full potential of their bilateral ties, particularly in sectors such as education, business, and capacity building.
India’s longstanding technical cooperation programs in Honduras have already created a foundation for collaboration, and Jaishankar expressed confidence in expanding those programs further in the coming years.
“This is one more step in solidifying our relationship with the region,” he concluded, noting that the shared commitment between India and Honduras now opens doors to broader engagement, innovation, and mutual growth.
