New Delhi, December 7: The Indian government has issued a strong travel advisory for Syria, urging Indian nationals to avoid all travel to the country until further notice due to escalating violence and significant risks to travelers.
"In view of the situation prevailing in Syria, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all travel to Syria, until further notification," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated in a press release on Friday.
The MEA has requested Indian nationals currently in Syria to:
The advisory follows a significant escalation in fighting in northern Syria, where rebel offensives have reignited a civil war that had largely subsided in recent years. Rebel groups have intensified attacks, capturing key territories such as Hama and advancing south toward Homs, a strategic city on the road to Damascus.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed that approximately 90 Indian nationals are currently in Syria, including 14 individuals working with UN organizations.
"We are closely monitoring the situation and remain in contact with our nationals to ensure their safety and security," Jaiswal stated during a press briefing.
The Syrian civil war began in 2011 during the Arab Spring protests, when President Bashar al-Assad cracked down on peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations. Over the past decade, the war has claimed the lives of more than 300,000 civilians and displaced millions, according to the United Nations.
While front lines had remained relatively unchanged since 2020, recent offensives by anti-regime rebels have forced hundreds of civilians to flee their homes. If Homs falls to rebel forces, it could split Assad-controlled territories in two, further destabilizing the region.
The ongoing violence underscores the urgency of the Indian government’s travel advisory, prioritizing the safety of its nationals amidst the turmoil.
