India Mostly With Ukraine On Kyivs Conflict With Russia, Says Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed cautious optimism about India’s support for Ukraine, stating that New Delhi is “mostly” aligned with Kyiv’s position on the conflict. He acknowledged India’s energy complexities with Russia but said he believes US President Donald Trump can help strengthen ties and shift its stance.
September 24, 2025: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a big declaration at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday. He stated he thinks India is “mostly” on Kyiv’s side in its fight with Russia. Zelenskyy told Fox News that India depends on Russian energy, but he hoped that stronger ties with the West, which US President Donald Trump is in charge of, could make New Delhi rethink its mind.
“I believe that most of India is with us. Zelenskyy added, “We have these questions with energy, but I think President Trump can handle it.” He also claimed that the US and Europe need to create “closer and stronger relations” with India. He also said that everything must be done “not to pull Indians” away from backing Ukraine. The statements come at a time when diplomats are trying to deal with India’s rising purchases of cheap Russian oil. This has become a major bone of concern for Western countries, particularly the US, which has put tariffs on Indian goods in response.
Zelenskyy also commended President Trump for being dedicated to Ukraine, saying that he was pleasantly surprised by Trump’s “clear message… that they will stand with us until the war is over.” He said that China is “more difficult” to work with since it has historically been aligned with Russian interests. This is very different from the way he feels about China. The Ukrainian president’s comments show that Kyiv is cautiously hopeful about India’s posture, even if New Delhi is still neutral and wants the crisis to be resolved peacefully through diplomacy.
