Jaishankar stresses safety of citizens and non-intervention
January 7, 2026: India has expressed concern over the unfolding crisis in Venezuela, urging all stakeholders to prioritise the safety and well-being of its people. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, speaking in Luxembourg, said India believes dialogue is essential to resolve the situation and reiterated New Delhi’s support for the Venezuelan population during the ongoing turmoil.
Referring to recent developments following the capture and transfer of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife during a US-led operation, Jaishankar said nations often act purely in self-interest while freely offering advice to others. Drawing a parallel with reactions during Operation Sindoor, he remarked that countries commenting on external tensions should also reflect on instability within their own regions and its wider impact.
Jaishankar made these remarks after bilateral talks with Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel. He highlighted 78 years of India-Luxembourg relations and said discussions covered finance, investment, digital technologies, AI, space cooperation and talent mobility, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening India-EU ties.
