Iran Blocks Hormuz Route
IRGC warns Western vessels of military action as Gulf tensions disrupt global oil trade
March 6, 2026: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz will remain closed to vessels linked to the United States, Israel, Europe and their Western allies amid the escalating Middle East conflict. The announcement, broadcast by Iran’s state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), warned that ships connected to these countries entering the waterway could face military action. Iranian authorities said the decision is based on their interpretation of international law during wartime, asserting Tehran’s right to control passage through the strait.
Commercial shipping through the narrow maritime corridor has largely halted since the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran earlier this week. The disruption has already sent global oil prices higher and raised concerns about supply shocks. Iranian officials earlier indicated that vessels flying the Chinese flag may still be allowed to pass through the route, describing it as a gesture of appreciation for Beijing’s stance during the crisis. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil passes through the strait, making it one of the most critical chokepoints in global energy trade.
Shipping data shows dozens of vessels waiting near Gulf ports as companies reconsider logistics routes amid the uncertainty. Large clusters of oil tankers have been spotted anchored near Kuwait and off the coast of Dubai, while Iranian merchant ships remain stationed near Bandar Abbas. Analysts say a prolonged blockade could severely disrupt Gulf exports and global supply chains, even though the main east–west shipping routes between Asia and Europe would remain operational.
