Tehran [Iran], December 25: Iranian authorities have officially lifted the ban on WhatsApp and the Google Play Store, marking a significant shift in the country’s internet policies, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
The decision follows a high-level meeting involving the heads of all three branches of government, key ministers, and members of the Supreme Council. Discussions focused on reassessing internet governance policies and addressing long-standing restrictions on global platforms.
After reviewing the findings presented by relevant authorities, the council approved measures to ease these restrictions, allowing access to WhatsApp and Google Play Store after years of blockage.
Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Sattar Hashemi, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the announcement:
“Today, we took the first step towards lifting internet restrictions with unity and collaboration. I extend my gratitude to the President, media, and activists for their efforts. We need this solidarity more than ever. This path continues.”
The move aligns with President Masoud Pezeshkian’s campaign promise to reduce digital restrictions and create a more inclusive digital landscape in Iran.
While lifting the ban on global services marks progress, the Iranian government has emphasized a dual approach:
Authorities have clarified that these changes aim to improve digital governance while safeguarding national cybersecurity interests.
The decision is expected to positively impact local businesses, tech startups, and individual users who have long faced hurdles due to restricted access. However, experts suggest the full benefits of this policy shift will unfold gradually.
For now, the lifting of these bans represents a milestone for internet freedom in Iran and sets the stage for a more connected and technologically empowered society.
