Assembly of Experts reaches majority consensus after Khamenei assassination
March 8, 2026: Assembly of Experts in Iran has reportedly reached a majority consensus on selecting a successor following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The clerical body, which is responsible for appointing the country’s highest religious and political authority, has been holding consultations as the nation faces a critical leadership transition.
Member Ayatollah Mohammad-Mahdi Mirbagheri confirmed that broad agreement has been achieved within the assembly on a potential successor. However, he noted that some obstacles in the process still remain and need to be resolved before the appointment is finalised.
According to Mehr News Agency, the discussions are continuing as Iran navigates the sensitive political situation following Khamenei’s death. The decision by the Assembly of Experts will determine the next Supreme Leader, a role that holds ultimate authority over Iran’s political and religious system.
