Tehran confirms communication with US envoy but warns it is fully prepared for escalation, including a potential ground conflict.
April 1, 2026: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed that communication channels with the United States remain open, revealing direct contact with US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff. However, he downplayed the chances of formal negotiations, stating that while dialogue continues, Iran is simultaneously preparing for further escalation. In an interview, he indicated that Tehran is bracing for multiple scenarios, including a possible US ground offensive and rising tensions over the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Taking a firm stance, Araghchi warned that Iran is ready to مواجهة any ground invasion. He said the country is fully prepared and waiting, expressing confidence that the US would hesitate to launch such an attack. He added that any land-based conflict would be met with strong resistance, with Iran’s military positioned to defend its territory effectively. His remarks come as the US increases troop presence in the Gulf, intensifying speculation that the conflict could expand beyond air and naval operations, even as diplomatic options remain officially open.
On the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said its future would ultimately be decided by Iran and Oman after the conflict ends, reiterating Tehran’s preference to keep it a peaceful route. However, he made it clear that access would remain restricted during wartime, particularly for countries involved in hostilities against Iran. Despite ongoing tensions, he noted that vessels from countries such as India, Pakistan, Turkey and China are still passing through the strait, often in coordination with Iranian authorities.
