F-35 claim, LNG hit and missile reach raise global tensions

March 21, 2026: The conflict triggered by the February 28 strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran escalated sharply after Israel targeted the South Pars gas field on March 18. In retaliation, Iran launched a series of military and strategic responses, intensifying the war that has been ongoing since late February. The escalation followed earlier strikes that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, further deepening hostilities.

Iran’s counterattack included a strike on the Ras Laffan LNG facility, one of the world’s largest gas processing plants, causing extensive damage and triggering a surge in global energy prices. At the same time, Iran claimed it had hit a US F-35 Lightning II—a first if confirmed—while US Central Command acknowledged an emergency landing by one of its aircraft. The situation escalated further with reports of ballistic missiles being fired towards Diego Garcia, a key US-UK military base, indicating a possible expansion of Iran’s strike range.

Meanwhile, tensions have intensified in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil route handling nearly 20% of global supply, as Iran stepped up pressure on shipping lanes and issued warnings to the United Arab Emirates. Amid rising military and economic costs, US President Donald Trump hinted at a possible de-escalation, stating that Washington may soon consider winding down its operations even as the region remains on edge.
