Iran Unrest Turns Deadly
Cops killed amid nationwide protests over economic crisis
January 8, 2026: Protests over economic distress have plunged Iran into widespread unrest with violence reported across several provinces. A viral video from Sistan and Baluchestan showed a police officer being killed in a drive by shooting. Iranian media identified the officer as Mahmoud Haghighat of the Iranshahr security forces with a militant Baluch group claiming responsibility.
Another police officer Shahin Dehghan was killed in a stabbing near Tehran during efforts to control protests. The demonstrations began last month at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar over rising prices and the collapse of the rial and have since spread to at least 25 provinces leaving dozens dead including security personnel.
The protests have taken an openly anti regime tone with slogans targeting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian authorities have warned of strict action accusing foreign powers of fuelling unrest. More than 30 people are reported dead with thousands arrested as Iran faces its most serious challenge since the 2022 protests.
