Shops shut in Srinagar and Poonch as security tightened following unrest over Khamenei’s death
March 3, 2026: Shops and business establishments in Srinagar remained closed for the second consecutive day as restrictions continued in parts of the city following violent demonstrations linked to the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Authorities maintained heightened security across sensitive areas to prevent further escalation and ensure public safety.
In Poonch, residents observed a complete bandh to mourn Khamenei’s death and protest against Israel and the United States. Security forces, including the police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were deployed in large numbers and placed on high alert to manage the situation and maintain law and order amid tensions.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level security review meeting at Lok Bhavan to assess the prevailing situation across the Union Territory. Senior officials, including Northern Command representatives and the Director General of Police, briefed him on developments and preventive measures. The administration emphasised coordinated efforts to restore normalcy and safeguard peace across Jammu and Kashmir.
