Las Vegas [US], January 3: The driver responsible for the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas has been identified as Matthew Alan Livelsberger, an active-duty US Army Green Beret, according to CNN.
Livelsberger, who was stationed in Germany with the 10th Special Forces Group, was reportedly on leave at the time of the incident. Authorities confirmed that he shot himself in the head moments before the explosion, which left seven people injured.
During a press conference, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill shared updates on the ongoing investigation.
“I will not confirm the subject’s identity until we have final verification through DNA or medical records,” McMahill stated.
The US Army confirmed in a statement that Livelsberger was on leave but did not explicitly mention his connection to the explosion. Known for their expertise in guerilla warfare and specialized military operations, the Green Berets are among the most elite units in the US military.
Authorities reported that Livelsberger acted alone, and his motive remains unclear. Preliminary investigations suggest he was carrying explosives in the Cybertruck.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on the incident, stating that the Cybertruck’s robust design contained the explosion and minimized collateral damage.
“The Cybertruck actually directed the blast upwards, preventing significant external damage. Not even the glass lobby doors were broken,” Musk said on X.
US President Joe Biden, addressing concerns over a possible link between the Las Vegas explosion and the New Orleans terror attack, confirmed that investigations had found no connection between the two events so far.
“I have directed every resource to be made available to federal, state, and local authorities to ensure public safety,” Biden stated.
The FBI continues to lead the investigation, with authorities analyzing Livelsberger’s background, motives, and any digital footprints that could provide further insight.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
