Muted Response In Caracas Amid Rising Tension

January 6, 2026: Nicolás Maduro’s son Nicolás Ernesto Maduro Guerra urged supporters to take to the streets after the Venezuelan leader was arrested and taken to the United States. He vowed to fight for his parents’ release and accused insiders of betraying the family. He claimed the nation would resist foreign backed rule.

Despite the call for mass mobilisation the response in Caracas remained limited. Only small movements were reported while armed masked groups were seen patrolling parts of the capital. Maduro Guerra said supporters would show unity and dignity and warned those who leaked information that led to his father’s capture.

Maduro Guerra who serves in the National Assembly was indicted by US authorities in 2020 on drug and weapons charges which he has denied. After Nicolás Maduro was transferred to New York Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as interim president. Venezuela continues to face uncertainty and tension.
