Mark Carney Praises Modi’s Mass Appeal
Canadian PM highlights Modi’s huge rallies as India–Canada ties move toward cooperation
March 5, 2026: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised the political outreach of Narendra Modi, noting the scale of his campaign rallies and his continued engagement with voters. Speaking about election campaigning, Carney remarked that the Indian leader still travels extensively across the country to address supporters. He highlighted the contrast in rally sizes, saying Modi often draws crowds of around 250,000 people while other leaders manage far smaller gatherings.
Carney also referred to Modi’s long political career, pointing out that his leadership journey began decades ago when he served as Chief Minister of Gujarat before becoming Prime Minister of India. The Canadian leader said this long tenure reflects continuity in Modi’s political presence and influence over the past two and a half decades.
The remarks came during Carney’s four-day visit to India, aimed at improving relations that had deteriorated after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged links between Indian agents and the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. During the visit, both sides pushed forward cooperation on critical minerals and uranium supply, including a $2.6-billion agreement between India’s Department of Atomic Energy and Cameco for the supply of 22 million pounds of uranium ore between 2027 and 2035, alongside discussions on a proposed free trade agreement.
