Drone strikes, rocket attacks and fresh US warnings intensify regional tensions
March 17, 2026: The ongoing conflict in the Middle East entered its 18th day with major escalations across multiple fronts. Iran reportedly launched a drone strike targeting the US Embassy in Baghdad, causing explosions and damage to the facility. In response, the United States activated its C-RAM defence system to intercept incoming threats and secure the embassy.
At the same time, Hezbollah carried out a major assault on Israel, firing rockets and drones toward the northern city of Nahariya. The attack triggered fires and emergency sirens, with rescue teams working to manage the aftermath. Meanwhile, US forces conducted heavy bombing on Kharg Island, a critical centre for Iran’s oil exports.
US President Donald Trump warned that Iran’s oil infrastructure could be destroyed “within minutes” if tensions escalate further. Iran, however, responded with a strong warning of severe consequences in case of additional strikes. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz also remains tense, as Washington struggles to gather allied support to secure the crucial global oil route.
