DOJ files highlight global reach of Epstein’s social network, no allegations against filmmaker

January 31, 2026: The latest tranche of documents linked to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has sparked discussion in India after the name of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair appeared in the newly released material. The mention has drawn attention not due to any allegation of wrongdoing, but for underscoring the wide reach of Epstein’s social and professional circles across cinema, politics and global elites.

The documents were released on Friday by the United States Department of Justice and include more than three million pages of records, over 2,000 videos and nearly 180,000 images, made public after an extensive internal review. Within the material, an email dated October 21, 2009, sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein, mentions attending a film-related party hosted at the New York townhouse of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate who was later convicted for facilitating his crimes, according to reports.

The email lists several high-profile attendees, including former US President Bill Clinton, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, businessman Jean Pigozzi and “director Mira Nair.” The gathering was reportedly linked to the premiere of Amelia, Nair’s 2009 biographical film starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere. Officials have stressed that the appearance of names in the files does not imply misconduct, noting that the records largely document social interactions. Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, and the disclosures continue to highlight the breadth of his global associations.
