On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near Sagaing, around 250 km from the capital Naypyidaw. This was followed by multiple strong aftershocks, sending tremors across Thailand, China, India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.

The Myanmar government confirmed over 150 deaths and 732 injuries, with fears the toll could rise. A state of emergency has been declared.
