Nepal: Gen Z Picks Kulman Ghising To Lead Interim Govt

Amidst nationwide anti-corruption protests, Nepal’s youth-led movement has proposed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead an interim government. The move has received public support from Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, who has urged all citizens to back the decision.

September 11, 2025: Kulman Ghising, a well-known engineer and former head of the Nepal Electricity Authority, has been appointed to head Nepal’s temporary government. People of all ages are working together to clean up the government and stop corruption. The appointment comes at a time when there is a lot of political upheaval and violent protests that made Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resign.

A lot of people think that Ghising is the best person to fix the country’s long-term problem with power shortages. After other well-known applicants dropped out, he was picked. At initially, a lot of people supported Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, but he turned down the role.

Sushila Karki, who used to be the Chief Justice, also quit the campaign. She remarked that her age and the Constitution’s flaws might make it challenging for her to speak for the “Gen Z” movement. There are claims that Karki was in talks to become the interim leader, but he said he would only do it if at least 1,000 protest groups wrote to him to show their support.

The Gen Z movement started the protests after the government restricted some social media sites. They want a new government that is honest and fair. Most of the time, established political parties haven’t listened to what they want. This has left a hole in politics that a temporary government needs to fill. A lot of people are glad that Ghising was picked since they like him. But the government hasn’t said anything public yet. There is nothing in the constitution of the country that talks about a “interim government” run by someone who isn’t a politician.

The army has been told to come in and make sure that everyone stays inside and that everything go back to normal. They’ve had a lot of conversations with Gen Z. The army has said it will support a constitutional process, but it has also said it wants to talk to other political groupings, especially those in the middle. Some youthful leaders don’t like this new thing. People know that Ghising is good at getting things done, so he would be in charge of getting the country ready for new elections and fixing the corruption and economic difficulties that led to the current crisis.
