No Official Confirmation on Reports Claiming Death of Iran’s Interim Supreme Leader Alireza Arafi
Amid intensifying tensions in the Middle East, unverified claims have surfaced regarding the reported death of Alireza Arafi, Iran’s interim Supreme Leader. Social media posts and certain Israeli media reports allege that Arafi was killed in an airstrike just hours after assuming office. However, there has been no confirmation from Iranian state media or major international news agencies so far.
Arafi assumed interim leadership following reports that Iran’s longtime Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in joint US–Israeli strikes targeting Tehran. In response to the leadership vacuum, Tehran invoked Article 111 of its Constitution, forming a temporary three-member leadership council to oversee the country until a permanent successor is chosen.
Under Iran’s constitutional provisions, when the Supreme Leader’s position becomes vacant, authority is transferred to a council comprising the president, the chief justice, and a cleric selected from the Guardian Council. Arafi was appointed as the jurist representative from the Guardian Council and is widely regarded as the most influential religious figure within the interim body.
If the claims about Arafi’s death are confirmed, it would further deepen Iran’s leadership crisis at a time of heightened regional instability. However, in the absence of official verification, the reports remain speculative.
Born in 1959 in Meybod, Yazd province, Arafi is a senior Shia cleric with strong ties to Iran’s religious establishment. He studied in Qom under prominent scholars and attained the rank of mujtahid, allowing him to issue independent Islamic legal rulings.
As of now, authorities in Tehran have not issued any statement confirming the reports circulating online.
