Om Birla To Represent India At Bangladesh PM Oath
India to send high-level delegation as Bangladesh ushers in new government
February 15, 2026: Tarique Rahman, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is set to be sworn in as Prime Minister in Dhaka on February 17 following a landslide electoral victory. The party secured a commanding majority in Parliament, marking a significant political shift in Bangladesh’s power structure. The oath will be administered by President Mohammad Shahabuddin at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Complex, departing from the earlier tradition of holding such ceremonies at the presidential residence.
From India, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri are expected to attend the ceremony, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs. The visit is being viewed as a signal of continuity in bilateral ties despite the political transition in Dhaka, underlining New Delhi’s intent to maintain diplomatic engagement with the incoming administration.
The swearing-in follows the political exit of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party, the Awami League, after the 2024 uprising. On the same day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai, highlighting parallel diplomatic engagements. BNP leaders have urged India to recognise what they describe as a “new political reality” and recalibrate ties between the two neighbours.
